Buying your first home using your KiwiSaver savings

If you've already built up some savings in KiwiSaver, then great news, you're on your way to getting into your first home faster.

There are two ways KiwiSaver may be able to help.

Firstly, you may be able to make a first home withdrawal from your KiwiSaver account to buy your first home or buy land to build your first home on.

To be eligible, you'll need to:

  • be a member of a KiwiSaver scheme and/or a complying superannuation fund for at least three years
  • have not owned a home or land before
  • be buying a home or land in New Zealand
  • intend on living in the home or on the land you're buying.

If you're eligible, you can withdraw your KiwiSaver savings, except for $1,000 and any amount transferred from an Australian complying superannuation scheme.

Secondly, you might also be eligible for a KiwiSaver HomeStart grant from Housing New Zealand.

If you’ve been a regular contributor to KiwiSaver for at least three years, you may be eligible for a HomeStart grant from Housing New Zealand.

The amount of the HomeStart grant depends on whether the home is existing or newly built.
